Christmas Competition 2015

8.50 a.m. and the crowds start arriving for our clubs own winter competition held at the Castleview Centre, Sunderland.
There were four areas running from 9.30 a.m. non-stop to get the event finished by 3.30 p.m. This is amazing efficiency with 167 karate students entered and it is not just down to me. The whole team played a part with the setting up, packing and unpacking as well as manning the tables etc.
The refs worked straight through with no lunch break and our table staff were fantastic and very professional. Eve Whitaker, Angela Nicholson, Mike Pomfret and Richard and Tracey Palmer really helped the day run smoothly. On the door, with the most stressful job, were the Mortons, Ed and Netty, and shops were manned by volunteer parents including hotdog Marg, Hannah Nicholson's nana. All the profits from these sales etc. go to the club funds. Plus as a "thank you" to all the parents who chipped in I donated the £240.00 KickMaster profits to the funds also. The day raised about £600 for the club funds. Funds pay 50% of all kids entries to competitions.
The competition itself has come a long way from the relaxed small inter-club competition that I started six years ago and is now as big as the smaller external ones we enter. It is also cheaper and caters towards low grades more than any other.
This is what this occasion is all about, encouraging local kids to participate in a tournament and giving them the chance to win a medal equivalent in standard to that of a national competition's medal. So, with luck, one or two will bite the bullet and take karate as seriously as my existing squad do. This way Dokan can continue to be a big name in English karate.
